The last years of elementary school can be an amazing time for kids, who have gained lots of skills and knowledge about their world by this age. However if your child appears sad or anxious, doesn't want to go to school, or has frequent emotional outbursts, it can be hard to know how to help as a parent. If your child has learning differences, it can lead to self-esteem and social challenges. Family changes can lead to tough emotions and behaviors as well.
I have experience supporting kids and families through these challenges. In my telehealth practice with children ages 10+, therapy will be something kids look forward to each week. I will take the time to get to know your child and make sessions a place that they can express themselves through play, art, or conversation. We will work together on identifying feelings and expressing them effectively. If your child suffers from anxiety, we will work with thoughts and feelings to tame worries.
The transition to adolescence is a big change for both kids and family members. Physical, thinking, and social changes come along with new kinds of emotions. Issues with friends and classmates take on more importance and can sometimes feel like unsolvable problems. For high schoolers, stress about the future increases. Sometimes family members wonder about the impact of home, community, or world events on teens who may not share as much as they used to. Teens may not even be sure they want to try therapy.
In your teen's session, I will meet them where they are. I have engaged many "hard-to-engage" kids so that therapy becomes a space that they can bring their genuine self without judgement. From fostering healthy relationships to managing stress to navigating identity, therapy will be a space for healing, self-discovery, and growth.
Parents
As a parent or primary caregiver, you are the crucial relationship for your child. Therapy will start with a parent intake session so that I may find out your concerns as well as your child's strengths and history. After weekly sessions with your child begin, I will meet with you at least monthly. I will support you as you support your child, by processing parenting challenges, enhancing communication with your child, and offering ways that you can model a healthy relationship to feelings. Parenting isn't easy, and I will be there as a resource.
